Kaluban Cloak Kydex Holster

If you read Monderno much, you know I’m a big fan of Kydex holsters. Over the next few weeks you will see reviews of outside the waistband (OWB) Kydex rigs from some of my favorite Kydex shops to date – some large, some small, but all are interesting for their own reasons. First up is Kaluban Cloak.

Kaluban Cloak is a veteran owned Kydex shop that makes semi-custom Kydex holsters. Yes, semi-custom. Most Kydex shops make the entire holster by hand, but not Kaluban Cloak. They have a proprietary process that not only allows them to make more holsters in a shorter period of time, but also with a higher level of quality control since some of the human error factor is removed.

Features

Kydex holsters are Kydex holsters, right? Well, yeah, but not exactly. Every Kydex shop does things a little differently.

Materials and Colors

Kaluban Cloak feels pretty strongly about using .08″ Kydex as opposed to .06″, and uses .08″ Kydex by default. Kaluban makes some interesting arguments, some of which will be the topic of a future post where we compare the two thicknesses. That aside, you can get .06″ if that is your preference.

Holsters can be ordered in many colors including (at the time of writing) black, olive drab, desert sand, haze gray and coyote.

Cut

One of the design features I really like about Kaluban Cloak holsters is the overall “minimalist” cut to the holster. I don’t know how else to describe it – the cut is just more aggressive than a lot of the Kydex holsters out there, especially around the trigger guard. Less material means less to get in the way of your draw stroke, and less to carry and conceal.

Retention

Retention is subjectively spot on (everyone likes it differently), and holstering finishes with a very audible and positive click, which I love.

Lead Times

Guns are being sold at a record pace, and apparently I’m not alone in my love of Kydex, because Kydex shops are all pretty much slammed. Some shops have ridiculous wait times, while others are reasonable. Kaluban Cloak has historically been very fast compared to the competition, with lead times at the time of writing at 10-15 days. As of June 2012 though, their lead times will increase to 25-30 days.

Quality and Value

Kaluban Cloak quality is outstanding considering they are semi-custom holsters. Fit and finish are both pretty much flawless. One of the areas where most Kydex shops don’t spend a lot of time on fit and finish is the loops. And who can blame them? No one sees loops when the holster is on, and spending time making them look good doesn’t really serve a purpose. Not Kaluban Cloak – their standard loops and progressive loops have the same attention to detail as the rest of the holster.

The cost of Kaluban Cloak holsters is on par most other quality Kydex shops. Given the quality level, that makes for great value.

Wrapping Up

Looking for a Kydex holster? Take a look at Kaluban Cloak. They have good quality Kydex rigs, with some of the best lead times around. I have one of their holsters….they goofed and listed it as a “Steyr M” holster, but was for the differently cut (thanks to a light rail) Steyr MA1 series. The Steyr M fit fine, and given it’s superb and sturdy construction I saw no practical reason to return it. I have several other similar holsters, including a Raven Concealment (the grand daddy of them all); the Kaluban Cloak rivals and/or surpasses every one of those holsters in terms of quality of construction and fit. It surpasses all of them with respects to materials used.

Awesome…I refuse to wait 4-5 months for a RCS holster. I’ll check Kaluban out, thanks!

I hear you man, no one wants to wait that long for a holster.

By the way Brandon….I agree 100% with your comment about attention to detail…first thing I noticed wasn’t the detailing in the front, but rather the detailing with the loops and the bottom of the holster. Both were impeccable….signs of a quality kydex holster maker in my opinion.

They sent me a holster that didn’t fit my weapon. It was way too tight and actually damaged the finish when I tried to use it. When I emailed them to try and work something out they responded with a rude, angry email insulting me and saying that they wouldn’t do anything at all.

Turnaround was fast, but if the holster doesn’t work and the company is not willing to provide any sort of customer service what does it matter.

I am backing to waiting for Raven. At least with Raven you can be sure the holster will work and not damage the finish on your weapon and if by the off chance you do need them to fix something they are extremely helpful and efficient about it.

Big thumbs down for Kaluban in my book.

Sorry to hear you had a bad experience Mike, thanks for sharing, but that certainly doesn’t fit my experience with Kaluban at all.

There’s nothing wrong with waiting for Raven if that’s what you want to do, but there are a BUNCH of great Kydex shops out there if you want a better turnaround time. We’ve reviewed several of them.
