Maxpedition Jumbo Versipack Review

Small packs have always been intriguing to me. As an hobbyist photographer, and someone who loves being outdoors, I’ve always wanted something that is rugged enough for hard use, has enough space for my large DSLR, but isn’t too bulky to carry or cumbersome for short hikes. Maxpedition’s Jumbo Versipack seems to meet my requirements. It strikes the right balance between size and cargo room.

I used the pack daily on a recently trip to Haiti, and I was struck by how easy it was to carry everything I would need for the day. Typically, I would carry my DSLR camera with one lens, a large Nalgene water bottle, gloves, a flashlight, pens, notebook, small snacks, and other miscellaneous items. The pack was still easy to carry all day, and provided easy access to everything when I needed it.

Another great feature of the pack, is it allows for easy concealed carry. The back pocket of the pack has plenty of room for any pistol. Maxpedition also offers a universal holster that fits right in. With practice, it is easy to draw your weapon fluidly, although it will never be as fast as a good holster.

Details

The Jumbo Versipack is extremely well made (1050-Denier water and abrasion resistant ballistic nylon), and it should hold up well under hard-use.

Here are the dimensions of the pack:

Rear Compartment: zippered 9″ x 8.5″ pocket
Front Pocket : 6.5″ long, 1.5″ wide, 7″ deep; mesh divider
Side A : 6″ x 3.5″ x 2″ with divider
Side B: 7.5″ high x 3″ diameter with cinch; fits 32oz/1L water bottle
Top of lid pocket: 6.5″ x 3″ x 1″

Final Thoughts

Maxpedition has made a great small bag. It has enough room to pack water, food, and gear in a small package. The only complaint I have with the bag itself is the weight. At two pounds empty, it is not svelte by any means. That little nitpick aside, there are a lot of options for this pack. I plan on using my pack on future photo walks and hiking trips. I could even see using it as a small version of an EDC bag. For about $75, you can’t go wrong.
