NASCAR and the NRA 500

Last Saturday was the NRA 500, a NASCAR Sprint Cup race at Texas Motor Speedway, a race that as the name suggests was sponsored by the National Rifle Association. To say that the sponsorship was controversial is a bit of an understatement.

There were reports of the media refusing to mention the NRA race by name, of Connecticut Senator Chris Murphy urging Fox not to air the race, and drivers being advised to not stand next to the NRA logo for interviews, all furthering the anti-NRA bias that is clearly present in the mainstream media. It was clear even before the race started that the event had the potential to backfire on the NRA. And then this happened.

Suicide at the NRA 500

Following an altercation infield at the NRA 500, 42-year-old Kirk Franklin of Saginaw died from a self-inflicted gun shot to the head. The apparent suicide happened “in or around a pickup truck” in part of the infield near the middle of the backstretch according to track spokesman Mike Zizzo.

Does this have the potential to be a PR nightmare for the NRA? Yes, I believe that it does, but the whole thing is more than just a bit odd in my opinion. Now let me be clear: I’m not claiming conspiracy or anything, there is no evidence that I know of to suggest that there was any foul play at work. But to say that this was a horrible coincidence doesn’t really do the thing justice. What are the odds that someone would commit suicide, with a gun, at the already controversial NRA-sponsored race?

One thing I will say is this – I think we can expect to see this tragedy used in some way to further the gun control agenda in the near future.

I agree 100% something doesn’t seem right about this at all.

There are reports that he was in a fight shortly before going to his truck, either way you look at it, it will reflect on the NRA.

You are correct. I have not heard of this so maybe you should not have published this story. Then we could do as the anti gunners do and say it’s all a lie and it never happened.

I think it’s about time the NRA did some ” Mainsteam” sponsorship. They (we) have a rather hidebound view of “advertising”, and it’s DEFINATELY time for a change. As far as “COINCIDENCE”, we all know there are none. This WILL be used against the Pro-GUN population in the short term. Then the truth will out and it’ll blow-up in the Constitution Crushing Left’s face, with diabolically wonderful results. I hope.

I don’t think it was so much a conspiracy as some poor suicidal man who couldn’t resist the irony.

Good thing there was a long investigation. Most of the time it takes a while.
