SHOT Show 2013 Media Day

There are a few things that I’ll never forget about Media Day 2013. The first is that it was cold and very windy, and my 3 layers were no where near enough, and the second is that despite the cold, it was a blast. Here are a few highlights.

Daniel Defense ISR

For me, the gun of the day was without a doubt the Daniel Defense Integrally Suppressed Rifle (ISR) chambered in 300 AAC. Daniel Defense had a selective fire version of the rifle, so of course we had to try a few rounds on full auto (hey, I wasn’t paying for the ammo).

The suppressor works extremely well. I was also surprised to find that recoil was negligible, and very manageable even in full auto. All in all a fantastic rifle, with a matching price tag. Also keep in mind that you will need a NFA tax stamp in order to purchase one (a semiautomatic version of course).

You can read more about the rifle from the good folks over at Gear Scout.

Glock 30s

This gun has caused quite a stir because, well, it’s Glock. But honestly, I wasn’t impressed with this gun. It’s just a Glock 30 SF frame with a Glock 36 slide. That’s it. So on paper, you get the capacity of a Glock 30 (10 rounds of .45 ACP) with the slimmer Glock 36 slide, which should be more concealable, right? I didn’t stick it down my pants, but I’m guessing no. The grip is still going to print the same way a Glock 30 SF prints, regardless if you shaved a little off of the part that’s in your waistband.

We’ll stop by the Glock booth this week and see if maybe I’m missing something. Wouldn’t be the first time. We spent most of our time with Glock shooting the Glock 20 Gen 4, which is a great gun.

Springfield Armory XDs 9mm

Springfield now has a 9mm version of the popular XDs. The XDs 9mm is going to come with 2 magazines, a flush fitting 7 round mag and an extended 9 round mag. We’ll have more to come on this gun in the future, but so far I’m impressed. I think it will certainly give my beloved Smith & Wesson M&P Shield a run for its money.

Oh, and Rob Leatham (The Great One) is a super cool dude. We hung out with him for 15 minutes or so at the Springfield tent and he’s a great guy. I’m sure he’s forgotten more about shooting than I know, and you’d never know it sitting and talking to him.

KRISS Vector CRB .45 ACP

We shot a couple different version of this weapon, suppressed and non-suppressed, and all of us loved the gun. The recoil impulse is definitely different as you might have already heard. The recoil seems to push directly back into you, as opposed to up and back. We shot a selective fire version, and switching between semiauto, 3 round burst and full auto was a lot of fun, and keeping rounds on target in full auto was easy.

That’s about all I have time for at this time. More updates coming soon!
