Veterans Day 2013

Veterans Day

To those who have answered the call, from all of us at Monderno, thank you.

I’m proud of what Veterans Day has become in this country, a day where we pause and collectively recognize the men and women who have served this great nation. I’m proud of what this day has become in America, but I’m not proud of how it started, in the year 1918, on a day that would be known in subsequent years as Armistice Day.

Armistice Day is the day that commemorates the armistice signed between the Allies of World War I and Germany. The history of Armistice Day is important and it’s worth remembering because it teaches a lesson that some of you who are anti-war really need to learn.

That lesson is that you can support our service men and women and still feel shame for politicians allowing men to die fighting battles that did not need to be fought, so that they could someday say “at the 11th hour, on the 11th day of the 11th month.” You can be anti-war and still say thank you for the sacrifices these men and women make on a daily basis. You can be anti-war and still feel incredible pride that when a category 5 typhoon hits a remote part of the world causing unimaginable devastation, literally some of the first aid to arrive is the United States Marines.

Because when the wolf growls at the door, whether the wolf is a natural disaster or terrorist group hellbent on our destruction, you can bet that our service men and women stand ready.

Thank you for ALL you wrote today about our veterans and our troops today.
