Colorado Apartment Tenants Told to Get Rid of Guns [Updated]

Just when I thought Colorado was heading in the right direction, I read this story out of Castle Rock, Colorado. Retired Marine Art Dorsch was reportedly sent a letter from his apartment complex, Oakwood Apartments, telling him that he must get rid of his guns if he wants to continue living there.

Disgusting, to say the least. Channel 9 News out of Denver tried to contact Brooke Young from Ross Management Group, who apparently manages the Oakwood apartment complex.

When reached by phone, Brooke Young, Ross Management Group regional manager, said “It’s our policy not to comment to the news media,” before hanging up.

Charming. If you’d like to try your hand at contacting Brooke or someone else from the Ross Management Group team to find out why they are violating the Second Amendment, their phone number is (303) 860-7885, or you can email them here. Please remember to be respectful. It’s not clear whether these new unconstitutional “community regulations” are coming from Ross Management Group, or Oakwood Apartments.

The folks in Colorado still have a long way to go to clean up their state. You can read more here.

Update 8/7/2013 9:30 EST

And wouldn’t you know, all the negative press has taken its toll, and the policy has been thrown out. Thanks to everyone who contacted the Ross Management Group. H/T to Mt. Man.

Sadly, they very well could be within their rights requiring this. When you rent month-to-month, or sign a lease, you can give up your rights. If Mr Dorsch has an active lease, then this would be grounds to break the lease, and for him to seek legal action. – IANAL – however, major changes in a lease normally allow you to break the lease.

Unless there was a very compelling reason to continue living there, I’d be out of there by the time the “rule” took effect. I’d also walk up and down the street advertising that the people living there don’t have guns to protect themselves, and burglars, robbers, and murders are welcome.

Agreed. I also think the bad press has a good chance to reverse this policy.

You know they are right they do not have to talk to the media about anything. They would have to talk to the lawyers of those involved. They do not have to deal with anybody else whatsoever especially prospective clients, investors and tenants. Like I said “I have no reason to visit Colorado anytime soon!”

I hear the recall isn’t going as well as originally thought so the anti-gunners will get ballsy now

A few notes to the readers. The number for the Ross Management Team is correct but the web site is wrong. Here is the right one with the number for the Oakwood Apartments http://www.ross-management.com/ross-community/colorado/castle-rock/oakwood-apartments/?type=community Also in the video he says he will have to leave his guns with a friend but under our new background check law he would need to get his friend to take a background check before giving them to him and again take another background check before he could take possession of them in the future. The background check will cost him $35-55 each time one is performed. Hillbilly, the recall is still moving along just fine so far. 100atr, thank you for boycotting Colorado.

      Which website is wrong?

      • Mt Man August 7, 2013 at 11:00 am #

For the Oakwood apartments. The one provided above are not the apartments in question.

        • Brandon August 7, 2013 at 11:21 am #

Well I have two links, one is to the Ross Mgmt Contact page, where you can email the management company, and the other is for Oakwood Apartments. The link you provided is the management company’s page for the Oakwood community. What am I missing?

          • Mt Man August 7, 2013 at 11:51 am #

The Oakwood link, http://www.oakwood.com/, is for a Mgmt firm that is not affiliated with the Oakwood apartments in question or Ross Mgmt.

          • Brandon August 7, 2013 at 11:58 am #

Interesting – so Ross Mgmt actually owns the Oakwood Apartments? They aren’t just the management company?

          • Mt Man August 7, 2013 at 12:29 pm #

I do not know if Ross owns them but they do manage them. http://www.oakwood.com/ is another separate management firm, if you search for the Oakwood apartments by name or address on that site nothing will show up because they do not own or manage the “Oakwood apartments” in question. Oakwood is just the quaint little name for the apartments in question.

No problem Brandon. Thanks for keeping everyone informed.

I heard from some people involved in the recall that some of the bigger names and big money isn’t coming through like they said they would have
I have donated towards the recall and hope to hell it succeeds but I know 2 guys involved that aren’t optomistic as they were since the big money names have backed out
Mt Man I wish Colorado all the luck in the world but this should be proof to any freedom loving human that the ballot box doesn’t work and in 10 to 20 years there will be no more freedom

    • Mt Man August 7, 2013 at 12:18 pm #

Thank you for donating. Here is a really well written article about the recall efforts, http://spectator.org/archives/2013/08/02/colorado-recalls-make-history/ This has been a grass roots effort from the start, not too sure what your talking about with the “big names”. Yes more donations would be great to off set the the mud slinging and lawyer fees but the recall is set for Sept 10th and going forward. It is anyone’s guess as what the out come will be but the support from the residents in the recall districts is pretty impressive.

…so would it be legal is the demanded no persons of Jewish faith, or believers in Buddha live there? Or that Christians not be allowed Bibles, or no registered voters? How about no Harry Potter books or word processors? They are renting homes, and your right cannot be denied in your home.

It’s a Constitutional right, and if it was applied to any of the things I listed above, the ACLU would be all over it.

    • Hillbilly Bob August 7, 2013 at 8:19 pm #

WOOHOOOOO now hopefully the recall also has a “Happy ending”
      Thanks Mt Man !!!!!!

Landlord at my old house told me and my roommates that no weapons were allowed in the house… “What landlord don’t know won’t hurt him…” unless he turns into an armed intruder, then its game on.
