Detroit Home Invasion

There’s a news story making the rounds that shows a Detroit home invasion caught on surveillance video, and I think it’s worth sharing.

(WXYZ) – A Detroit mother opened fire Monday night when three suspects broke into her home.

Surveillance cameras caught it all.

The mother tells Action News she “didn’t have time to get scared.” When she heard the door to her home on Woodrow Wilson being kicked in, she immediately warned the three teenage intruders and then opened fire.

One of the teens dropped a handgun on his way out the door. He then tried to get back inside the house a second time, but was again met with gunfire. Once again, he took off and all three were arrested shortly after the incident by Detroit Police.

I think this story is interesting for a couple reasons. First, the mom defended her home with what looks like a Hi-Point Carbine like this one.

Hi-Point Carbine

Say what you want about Hi-Points (I’m certainly not a fan), but the carbine worked – the mom and her kids survived unharmed and bad guys were scared off. If the mom had some more training/practice, who knows, those three young men might be dead right now.

The second reason I find this interesting is the behavior of one of the thugs. After initially running from gunfire, he decided to come back after pulling out his own gun. Good on the mom for being alert, or he might have been able to surprise her, and there might have been a much different outcome. Check out the video below.

Update: I swapped out the embedded video for this YouTube version so that it would be more mobile friendly. The news video starts at 00:35.

Good job to the mom – now get some training and a real rifle, and next time kill those punks.

Glad she ignored idiot Joe Biden and bought a semi-auto rifle instead of a double-barrel shotgun

Real after-the-game-quarterbacking, to say a shotgun wouldn’t have been effective, or linking appropriate weapon (especially for this situation) to Joe Biden. Maybe one serious blast from a twelve gauge would have hurt one, OR ALL of the perpetrators. The blast would probably seem more formidable than hearing a 9mm round.Try getting beyond your knee-jerk political stances.

Problem w double barrel is two shots then reload…range isn’t that great so are you suggesting she waits for three people to get close enough to get all of them without having to reload? One guy was armed, how close would you let these three people get w at least one armed w a pistol before you finally tried to stop them? Have you ever really confronted an aggressor much less three at once?

Close? Hell they are coming through the door. How close do you need to be? Meet Mr. Mossberg. They come to my house I’ll blow them out of their tennis shoes, the cops will not need to look for them as they will be laying in the front yard.

Great job she was able to defend her family – In a city that has failed, she is one of the hero’s.

Yup, you try breaking into my house and you will be met with gunfire also. Depends on my mood whether it will be the shotgun with 00 buckshot under the bed or the 9mm right next to the bed. Oh, and there will be no warning shot. At the price of ammo these days I can not afford it.

The average spread of a shotgun is 1″ a meter…hardly an area weapon as Hollywood makes it out to be. As far as blowing them out of their shoes, the very idea is a violation of the laws of physics. A semi-automatic rifle, even a pistol caliber carbine in this case has a greater rate of fire and higher capacity than the venerable shotgun. Not even the cliche “rack the shotgun and they’ll run away” would have worked in this case as one dirtbag tried to make entry back into the home under fire. Dont count on a show of a weapon always being a deterrent.. Shotguns certainly have their place, but there are better choices for home defense.

Don’t knock the Hi-Point too much. I have a lot of expensive guns, AR’s, M1’s, but I also have one of the older design 9mm carbines. It’s ugly and cheaply made, the trigger sucks to high heaven, but it just works. Runs like a sewing machine. Best thing is they are inexpensive and make a good home defense gun for people who might not be able to afford a more expensive option. They’re like the “Saturday Night Special” of the carbine world.
