Right on cue, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) today called for “universal” background checks on all gun sales after the shooting in Las Vegas over the weekend that left five dead including the two shooters.
On the Senate floor, Reid said the following (emphasis added):
We here in Congress have a duty to put into place legislation that helps prevent deranged, evil individuals from carrying out such savage acts of violence. Universal backgrounds checks would be a good start. The American people are depending on us to pass legislation.
While this has zero chance of going anywhere at this point, you can expect more of this talk in the coming days. The shooters were reportedly anti-government, white supremacists who draped a Gadsden flag over the bodies of the killed police officers and shouted to onlookers that the “revolution” has started. Some outlets are even reporting that the shooters were involved at the Bundy ranch standoff.
Because of this, the Democrats will use this “opportunity” to paint with an even broader brush than they normally use. Again, I don’t expect this to go anywhere, but if we get more shootings like the one in Vegas over the weekend, the Republicans will cave and our personal liberties, including but not limited to our right to keep and bear arms, will be restricted. Count on it.
