Senate Rejects Gun Control

Today the Senate rejected gun control, and in a big way. Several gun control proposals failed today, including amendments that would have banned standard capacity magazines, increased background checks, taken guns away from Veterans, and banned virtually every semi-automatic firearm.

Here are some of the highlights.

Lautenberg-Blumenthal Magazine Capacity Amendment

Failed with 46 voting for and 54 voting against. This would have banned those high capacity assault magazine clip thingies.

Burr Veteran Amendment

Failed with 56 voting for and 44 voting against.

Feinstein Ban Everything Amendment

Failed with 40 voting for and 60 voting against. This amendment had zero chance of passing from its inception, but I’m glad it came to a vote. Now the traitors who voted for it can have the vote used against them in 2014.

Manchin-Toomey Background Check Amendment

Failed with 54 voting for and 46 voting against. This was the amendment that I thought had the best chance of making it out of the Senate to be quickly killed by the House, but it failed to make it even that far. Thankfully.

Following the vote, the NRA released the following statement.

NRA Statement

Today, the misguided Manchin-Toomey-Schumer proposal failed in the U.S. Senate. This amendment would have criminalized certain private transfers of firearms between honest citizens, requiring lifelong friends, neighbors and some family members to get federal government permission to exercise a fundamental right or face prosecution. As we have noted previously, expanding background checks, at gun shows or elsewhere, will not reduce violent crime or keep our kids safe in their schools.

The NRA will continue to work with Republicans and Democrats who are committed to protecting our children in schools, prosecuting violent criminals to the fullest extent of the law, and fixing our broken mental health system. We are grateful for the hard work and leadership of those Senators who chose to pursue meaningful solutions to our nation’s most pressing problems.

NO ! Not in a big way. All these votes were way to close! People need to pay attention to the idiots that voted for these bills and remove them from office !

Voting down every amendment is a good thing Camo, but I agree with the point you’re making. The fact that these bills were even proposed offends me.

    Brandon,
Do you think it would be possible at some point in the future to post who voted for what. I know we can find that information ourselves, but it would be nice for those of us who are regular visitors to this blog to see this information gathered here.

    • Brandon April 17, 2013 at 6:17 pm #

Sure – I’m also thinking about putting together a 2A Election Guide for the 2014 elections, using only votes that have taken place since Sandy Hook.

Whew, I hope availability and prices of guns and ammo start returning to a “normal” state quickly. Nice to see the calls and letters paid off. I live in Nevada and I and a big group of Nevadans were hammering Reid and Heller on this issue. Heller took so much guff about voting to let S 649 proceed to the floor that he sent messages out quickly saying he was voting against Toomey-Manchin-Schumer.

1st- It is good to see that the senators who voted for the fillibuster were just ready to get this over with and get back to a “normal” state.
2nd-It is hard to see those numbers so close but with a democratic controlled senate it is good to see that the battle was still won. Creating a 2014 election guide together would be a great idea and please be opinionated in your ruling, as we want to know who did what but also a lesser of two evils situation if it comes to it.
3rd- Here is where the fear of state legislation comes in. I live in NC and haven’t heard of any restrictions coming my way but this may be a time where states would want to show out like Colorado and NY already have.
4th- Thank you to Brandon and the whole Monderno team for keeping us updated and in the know!

We’re fighting a vertical battle here in CA 🙁

  8. CG April 17, 2013 at 7:24 pm #

Wait Burr failed with 56 for and 44 against? I thought the Burr proposal was to protect vets from arbitrary loss of their 2nd ammendment rights?

    • Brandon April 17, 2013 at 7:34 pm #

You’re right, that was one of the good ones – the one that allowed them a pathway to getting their guns back.

  9. chris knowles April 17, 2013 at 9:34 pm #

The media seems to be portraying this like anyone can now buy guns online , no background check required resulting in guns landing on your doorstep Willy nilly, I wish lol!

I know the libtard gun grabbers in Ohio are having a meltdown and I actually laugh at all their messages sent out by email
But the main part in their emails is that they will keep trying year after year, they should have told the truth and said they will keep trying tragedy after tragedy
When the smallest thing or even a big event happens then they will be out in full force once again screaming for our guns and rediculous laws that would never have stopped any tragedy
We sure as hell know mayor Bloomtard will never stop until he is in the ground and even after his death he will donate his billions to some anti gun group to press on with the libtard attack

We may have won this battle, but the war wages on. We must remember to be always vigilant for our enemy is evil and will never cease.

    • Hillbilly Bob April 18, 2013 at 9:27 am #

I agree, they will never stop waging war on law abiding gun owners, I say the NRA should strike right now and push for the repeal of all the gun laws on the books haa

Just some random thoughts on this situation…

So, if the 1968 Gun Control Act prohibited selling of firearms to certain categories of individuals (including criminals and the mentally ill), the 1993 Brady Bill strengthened the GCA by establishing a national background check system to conduct background checks on individuals before a firearm may be purchased from a federally licensed dealer, manufacturer or importer, and the 1996 Lautenberg Amendment further prevents access to firearms by people convicted of crimes of domestic violence… do we need to enact a universal background check law? Or do we need to enforce it better?

Same thing with straw purchasers- do we need to enforce the laws better or create new ones?

Finally, the gun show loophole controversy. The Washington Post pointed out that the 40% figure was from a 1994 survey of 251 people before the Brady Bill went into effect. That survey had a margin of error of +/- 6 percent… and in 1996, the same people who conducted a lengthier study and could only come up with an estimate of 30-40%. Also, at the same data from the 1994 survey shows that on 3.9% (three-point-nine, not thirty-nine) of firearms purchases were done at gun shows. Honest dealers conduct background checks at gun shows- who would want to endanger their livelihood? But, if the crimes of straw purchasers and dishonest gun dealers are rarely prosecuted… why would you think new laws would make a difference?

If people want to fight for their 2A rights, people need to be fully informed on what laws already exist in terms of gun control. Polls that claim that 90% of Americans support universal background checks highlight emotions, lack of knowledge on current firearm statutes, or some combination there in. People need to be educated- from the way the media and other people talk- it sounds like the U.S. has no gun legislation.

Is it perfect? No system of laws without strong enforcement will be. Rudy Giuliani didn’t reduce crime in New York by passing more laws, he started to enforce them- even the ones people saw as trivial.

2A Supporters- please be respectful of other people’s arguments and respond to them using logic and facts. This is a very passionate issue, but if you fight emotion with more emotion, you will never win. To quote Patrick Swayze… Be Nice, until it is time not to be nice.

Sorry to be longwinded, but if this helps in any of your efforts… glad to be of service.

My thoughts.,, a little off track, yet still on subject, We need to get a presidential candidate who would sign for gun permit reciprocity.. Of course the current senate for sure would pass this! Wink! Wink!

    • Camo April 19, 2013 at 3:14 pm #

I disagree. If the feds get involved with reciprocity then they will have list of permit holders and other way to track and confiscate guns at will. Leave it to the states. My permit is good in about 45 states and I don’t need to go where it’s not. This hurts anti-gun states like NY, CA, IL, NJ, HI, etc…. so let them suffer financially.
