Academy and AR-15s

The news today in the world of firearms was pretty grim. Here’s a short recap.

Dick’s Sporting Goods pulled AR-15s off their shelves.
Walmart pulled AR-15s off their shelves.
Cheaper Than Dirt stopped selling firearms altogether, and sprinkled some price gouging on top.

So what about Academy? I’ve bought guns from them in the past, so I have been pretty interested to see what Academy does. If you’re not familiar with Academy, they are all over down here in the south and are similar to Dick’s Sporting Goods. The difference is that have a decent selection on firearms (not great, but decent) and ok prices.

After speaking with several people in the industry (that’s as specific as I can get), here’s the scoop.

  • Academy is still selling AR-15s
  • They are not on display, you have to ask to see them
  • Once you ask to see them, they can give you one to look at, but only one at a time. Not one per customer, one rifle at a time.
  • Each customer is limited to purchase 2 per day.

So that’s the deal. MUCH better than the cowards at Dick’s, Walmart and Cheaper Than Dirt, but still not great. Everyone is watching and waiting to see what Congress is going to do.

Here’s hoping the Republicans don’t sell us out.

we arent doing anything different than we did before last friay. the only thing that has changed is we are getting 200-300% more customers wanting ar-15s and high capacity mags as an investment now.

A friend of mine was in Academy yesterday and said while he was there they pulled the “assault” rifles off the shelf and even took one back from a guy that was in the process of buying it. I hope Academy didn’t cave, would hate to take ALL my outdoors business elsewhere!!!

cheaper than dirt just stop selling firearms online you can still go to their stores buy them

  3. Will December 18, 2012 at 8:47 pm #

Yes. Academy in Alexandria, LA is still carrying them. Or were. They HAD sixty “assault weapons” (according to the liberals) 24-hours ago and 24-hours later they were sold out. All of them. ARs, SIGs, etc.

    They won’t stop selling.

We’ll see who STANDS UP and whom else folds. These retailers did not sell quality ar’s Academy does at least sell 2Vets.

Pretty sure academy started off more of a firearm and outdoors type of store then went to a sporting goods store. Don’t ever see them leaving those roots.

Rock Hill, SC still is the same. Probably going to buy something this weekend to add to liberals cool statistics. SMH

Well hopefully AR’s will out last all the hysteria. I have yet to own or afford one but I at least have a 2Vets DOS lower on the way as well as a DD lpk and some magpul mags to build one at some point. I appreciate the information you provide us. It gets hard to get clarity through all the noise. Hopefully after the first of the year I can get all my goodies in order. Thank you!

As of yesterday, here in Houston they were still on the shelf. Oh, and I am still fighting my right to the 2nd too.

This is the equivalent of a run on the banks, only this is on firearms. There are no firearms to replace the ones that have been sold over the past few days. The manufactures are all dried up. They were behind on production before this ever happened and now with the recent events it is fuel to the fire. This is a bubble. 2 things needed for a bubble: Speculation and inflation.

If I can’t get one person to sell me what I want, I know I can find someone who will. The problem will be the price. I’ve already seen prices go up $300 on a simple look alike.

As I understand it, the Cheaper Than Dirt physical gunshop in TX is NOT affiliated with the Cheaper than Dirt mail order catalog. Not owned by the same people or in any way related.

Interesting, thanks for the info Frank.

Clint Smith posted that yesterday. I sounds like he has a relative who works there in the TX shop.

    Thanks for the info!
I’m going to stop by Academy and see if they have hidden their display ARs.
To be fair, the looking at one gun at a time policy has always been in place if I’m not mistaken.
I wasn’t aware of the 2 purchases per day. Does that include all firearms or just ARs?

You will all have to forgive me as I play a little devils advocate. Why is it that firearm manufactures are all dried up and not meeting production needs? I get that during the Obama election (initial) and some of the incidents at that time they were hesitant to ramp up production for fear of drastic drop off. But sales haven’t dropped off. If anything it appears to have increased. Why haven’t firearm manufactures taken the step to increase their production to meet demands? It is almost as if most are holding out so as to control the price market.

Again, just a thought that hit me this morning. Not trying to jab any manufactures or businesses. I’m sure there is more to the business end of firearm manufacture but curious to me none the less.

after thinking about what cheaper than dirt has done, they have lost me as customer. and that’s too bad.but if you give into the hand ringers that’s what you do. it’s not the hand ringers who buy from cheaper than dirt. harvey

I wasn’t aware that Wal-Mart sold any firearms on-line anyway. They rifles I looked at always said “In-store only” I like that they said they were not making any changes to the firearms they sell. Frankly, I’ve never purchased anything gun related, other than ammo, from Wal-Mart but they may pick up my business.

“Wal-Mart took down a listing on its website Monday for a semiautomatic assault rifle from the same maker as the Bushmaster AR-15, that was used by Lanza. In July, James Holmes used a similar semiautomatic rifle at a movie theater in Aurora, Colorado, to kill 12 people and injure 58 others.

David Tovar, a Wal-Mart spokesman, said the Bushmaster gun was not for sale online and the web listing contained directions for the nearest store where it could be purchased. The ad was pulled because of sensitivity to the Newtown massacre, Tovar said.

Similar assault rifles, including the Bushmaster, continue to be available for sale at over 1,200 Wal-Mart stores where guns are sold.

“We have not made any changes to the assortment of guns we sell,” Tovar said.

In the past year, sales of guns at Wal-Mart have skyrocketed. Executive vice president Duncan Mac Naughton told shareholders at a meeting in October that gun sales at Wal-Mart stores open for a year or more increased 76% for the year, and ammunition sales were up 30%”

I spoke with a manager at Academy and he wasn’t happy with the “no display rule” either. He has emailed coporate and suggests we all do also. You can email them on the “Contact Us” page of their website. Please email them and pass this along to anyone that will listen. Let’s tell Academy to pick a side because we don’t need any fair weather friends. Thanks
