This chart just doesn’t add up…..compare Washington state and Maryland and you’ll see exactly what I mean.

      What doesn’t add up?

Did you compare the stats for Washington state and Maryland? Washington has approximately double the crime rates that Maryland does in all but 3 categories…including “forcible rape” which is both a sex crime (which is a category left out of these stats) & a violent crime (which already has it’s own category). So I don’t see how Washington is light green & Maryland is dark orange/red (Delaware’s current color) which puts two color options between them…..at least it was yesterday but today it’s somehow downgraded to just orange…but my point still stands.

You’d have to ask them about their color coding algorithm, I can only speculate. When I compare Washington and Maryland, I see that Maryland has higher crime in the following areas: Violent Crime, Murder, Robbery, and Aggravated Assault. I suspect the categories are weighted, which feeds into their algorithm (Violent Crime weighted higher than Auto theft, for example).

Having said that, I think the most interesting part of this chart is that it allows you to easily compare state rankings. For example, anyone considering moving can use this tool to find out where a state ranks in all the major crime categories.

Way. Green doesn’t mean no crime, it means lower crime comparatively speaking.
