Veterans Day 2012

For all of the men and women who keep our enemies awake at night, those who have served this great nation both past and present, from all of us here at Monderno, thank you.

The History of Veterans Day

At the 11th hour, on the 11th day of the 11th month…

For those that do not know the history behind Veterans Day, it was originally called Armistice Day, to celebrate the armistice between Germany and the Allies that ended the Great War, the war to end all war, or World War I as we now call it.

To us in America, the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country’s service and with gratitude for the victory, both because of the thing from which it has freed us and because of the opportunity it has given America to show her sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of the nations

-President Woodrow Wilson, November 11, 1919

In 1945, Word War II veteran Raymond Weeks led a delegation to Gen. Dwight Eisenhower to expand Armistice Day to celebrate all veterans. In 1947, Weeks, who is often referred to as the Father of Veterans Day, led the first national celebration. In 1954, President Eisenhower signed a bill into law formally establishing the holiday.

And on this day, and every day, thank a Veteran.
