Chicago Votes For More Gun Control

Tuesday night, former Illinois State Representative and gun control advocate Robin Kelly easily won the special Democratic primary election held to replace the disgraced Jesse Jackson Jr. in Congress.

In case you haven’t been paying attention, Jackson, who was a reliable vote for gun control in Congress, resigned in November last year and pleaded guilty to misusing over $750,000 in campaign money. Chicago political corruption at its finest. Given the district’s voting history, Kelly is pretty much a shoo-in for the general election that will take place on April 9.

Here’s why this matters.

How Kelly Won

What’s interesting is exactly how Kelly won the primary election – with the help of Michael Bloomberg. New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg‘s Independence USA PAC spent millions of dollars on TV ads to get Kelly elected. Why did Bloomberg, Mayor of New York, spend millions of dollars to get Kelly the nomination in Illinois?

The answer is gun control, and another vote for it in Congress.

Until Bloomberg’s money entered the race, polls had shown that the special election might be won by Debbie Halvorson, a former congresswoman who had an A+ rating from the NRA and opposed an assault weapons ban. Yahoo News reports:

“He [Mayor Bloomberg] turned this election into a referendum on the NRA,” said Chicago Democratic political analyst Don Rose.

A little over an hour after the polls closed, Halvorson called Kelly to concede defeat, saying that Bloomberg’s television ads had overwhelmed her campaign.

“There was $2.3 million minimum spent against me,” Halvorson told supporters. “That’s the way it is. I can’t help it.”

The voters in Chicago were very receptive to Bloomberg’s anti-gun and anti-NRA message because of the worse-than-war-zone-like violence that has plagued the city. A city that already has some of the toughest gun control laws in the country…proving once again that yes, the majority of the voters in Chicago really are just that stupid.

Meet Robin Kelly

To get an idea of just how bad Kelly is, one only has to listen to her speak. She had the following to say to her supporters in her victory speech:

The voters sent a message that tells the NRA that their days of holding our country hostage are coming to an end. And their days of scaring Congress into submission on gun control are coming to a close.

Make no mistake, these people think they can win this battle. So much so that they are willing to spend millions of dollars to get another vote in Congress, proving once again that they will put their money where their mouth is. The only question is, will you?

For the record, Halverson had not chance of winning. One, the district that she is in is so radically upside down, uneducated and misinformed. Two, even if Halverson was close a few folks would have “made sure” she won…..thats just how it works in Chicago.

On a more positive note amendment 27 of Maddigan’s terrible concealed carry bill 1155 passed in the IL house last night. This is the meat and potatoes of a “shall issue” carry bill (as opposed to “may issue” like NY or CA). There are some amendments that go with this that restrict where you can carry. However, I’m not worry about it because these are not thing the IL 7th circuit court of appeals will find reasonable. So some progress is being made in IL for gun owners. We all know Chicago is fubar so most of us don’t care what happens within the city limits.

Sorry for the misspeakings in my previous post. I get excited. Here are the details on last night’s small victory for IL gun owners.

Keep in mind its Cook (Crook) County that drives the anti-gun bus in this state and unfortunately they are all part of the “machine” and are the best funded. But we have some great folks in all other directions from Chicago standing up for whats right.

You should care Tim. Chicago politics has long controlled state politics. Also, if Robin Kelly is elected (more like when) she is another vote in Congress for gun control.

All that race proved is that a guy from NYC can buy a Chicago election.
