D-Day, 70 Years Later

6 June 1944 – D-Day, as it would later be known. The largest seaborne invasion in history. The landings in Normandy, France, codenamed Operation Neptune, were the start of the Allied invasion of German-occupied western Europe during World War II.

The cost was great.

Everyone will reflect on today in their own way – for me, I will think about the World War II veterans I’ve been fortunate to meet and speak to, and the heroes I’ve read about.

Men like Jim “Pee Wee” Martin, the 93 year old WWII vet of Col. Sink’s 506th PIR, 101st Airborne Division who parachuted down over Utah Beach on D-Day, and then did it again 70 years later. Last year, Jim ran “Currahee Mountain” in Surrey, England, the site where HBO’s “Band of Brothers” series was filmed, as well as Currahee Mountain in Toccoa, Georgia at the age of 92. Learn more about Jim’s journey in WWII here.

The men of D-Day were part of what was truly America’s Greatest Generation. The cost of D-Day was great. May the world never forget.
