Magpul Field Case

Being notoriously hard on phones, I have been looking for the perfect case to keep my new iPhone 4S safe. I’ve looked at and tried a few of the expensive ones from big electronics stores, but have been unimpressed with their style, price and quality. That’s when the Magpul Field Case caught my eye. Known for making great gun accessories (butt stocks, magazines, slings, etc.), Magpul got into the iPhone case market in an interesting way. After issuing iPhones company-wide, they were unimpressed with the quality of aftermarket cases. Being a manufacturing company specializing in molded polymer, they figured, “Why not make a better case at a cheaper price?”

So did Magpul succeed at making a better case? In a word, “Yes.” I am very glad I bought mine. The compact design doesn’t add much bulk to the thin iPhone, and it still provides great protection from minor dings and everyday use.

The styling of the case is another highlight. It looks very rugged and the textured rubber provides a lot of grip when handling the phone (see slideshow below), but it still slides easily in and out of my pocket. All the ports on the phone are still easily accessible, and the raised lip on the front of the case will protect the phone if it is set screen side down. Overall, the execution is good, and the only minor issue I could find were a couple of small mold seams around the edges of the case.

The final word: If you have an iPhone and want a unique, tactical look with a lot of protection at a low price point, this is your case.
